Cole’s Fabulous First

“It’s Time to Show our Love for Learning!” This will be our first grade theme for the month of February. My little first graders have BIG goals to achieve. Mid-Year assessments were completed before Christmas break. First grade students are expected to read near 20 words per minute by mid-year. The DIBELS assessment is the assessment used to determine who has met this reading goal. I am pleased to report that the majority of my fabulous first graders did meet benchmark on their DIBELS assessment. Now, we focus on the end-year goal which is to be able to read about 50 words per minute.

Parents, it is important that you read with your child each day. Research shows that children who are read to at least 20 minutes per day will be more successful than those who are not read to. Tier II and tier III students receive guided reading instruction daily. Many are reading independently during small group time and are taking AR tests. Most are meeting weekly/monthly reading goals as well. When they meet a reading goal Mrs. Henson awards them with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. The students who have at least 25 AR points by the end of the year will be part of a much bigger celebration.

This has been our first year implementing Great Minds for both Math and Reading. Currently, my fabulous first graders are making math more efficient by using the make ten strategy and by counting on to help add numbers. Students are explaining the strategies they use and are sharing strategies with their peers. They will continue to compose and decompose numbers as they strive to become fluent in adding and subtracting within 20.

It’s always hard to say good-bye to a student/classmate. However, Shelby Turner has new mountains to climb. We love you Shelby and wish you much happiness and success as you begin this new journey.
