Breathitt County Schools - Important Announcement (Tuesday, February 4, 2020)

Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Breathitt County Schools remains committed to putting students first in all decision making.  With that in mind and in an attempt to reduce the spread of illness impacting our students and staff, the decision has been made to cancel school for the remainder of the week.

Beginning tomorrow, school facilities will be closed to the public and all non-essential activities will be cancelled.  These closures will allow custodial staff to thoroughly clean and disinfect all facilities. If you have questions regarding a specific activity, please contact the school directly.

We ask that all families help us in these efforts by following the prevention guidelines of hand-washing, limiting contact with those who are ill, and washing backpacks, lunchboxes and similar items.

This year the 2013 FFA scholarship recipient is Miss Alyce Combs. Alyce Combs with KY College Coach, Renée Leveridge

Alyce has been a FFA member for the past three years and has loved her time in this wonderful organization. Her future plans include attending Hazard Community and Technical College in the fall and later transferring to Morehead State University to major in Veterinary Medicine.

The FFA Organization offers $2.1 million in scholarships, with scholarships sponsored by businesses and individuals through the National FFA Foundation. Alyce is being awarded $1,000 from Tractor Supply-Growing Scholars.

Mrs. Sherri Stewart, Breathitt Co. High School FFA adviser was very excited when she found out Alyce was awarded the scholarship, “She has been an excellent and dedicated student for the past three years. We all wish her the best of luck.”

Alyce was very excited as well because this is helping her pay for her college education and helping her get closer to her goal of becoming a vet, “This scholarship means a great deal to me. Receiving this scholarship is going to help me further my education and help me reach my goal, a goal I have always dreamed of. I would like to thank the FFA Organization, Mrs. Stewart, and Renée Leveridge for helping me accomplish so many things this year.”

EXPLORE, PLAN, ACT
EXPLORE is the first part of the EPAS testing system that goes on to include PLAN and ACT.  Students take EXPLORE in the 8th grade, PLAN as 10th graders, and the ACT as juniors and/or seniors.  All three test in English, math, reading, and science.  However, the material tested in each program gets more difficult.  Students' EXPLORE scores are good predictors for how well they will score on the PLAN, and PLAN scores help predict ACT.  Students' skills in the tested subjects will make a big difference--in school, and eventually, in their career.  Once they know what each test covers, their EXPLORE and PLAN scores can show them where they're strong or weak.
