Week of September 24-28

Objectives for the week:
To summarize the main points of a story and to restate the important information in the story in your own words. 
To understand clauses. 
To read and understand folk tales.

Core Content:

Day 1:
Listen for enjoyment and concentrate on the speaker.
Discuss summarizing and paraphrasing.
Use context to confirm meaning to increase involvement with the text.
Discuss vocabulary words.
Assignment: Pages 162-163
MODIFICATIONS: Reading selections will be read aloud, and answers will be recorded on overhead (as deemed necessary).
EXTENSIONS: Students will incorporate summarizing and paraphrasing into their discussions.

Day 2:
Continue discussing summarizing and paraphrasing.
Read Folk Tales from Asia.
Answer review questions.
Assignment: Pages 164-178.
MODIFICATIONS: Reading selections will be read aloud, and answers will be recorded on overhead (as deemed necessary).
EXTENSIONS: Students will incorporate summarizing and paraphrasing into their discussions.

Day 3:
Continue discussing summarizing and paraphrasing.
Review correct answers for review questions.
Discuss figurative language.
Assignment: Practice Book Pages 27-28
MODIFICATIONS: Reading selections will be read aloud, and answers will be recorded on overhead (as deemed necessary).
EXTENSIONS: Advanced/Challenge Activities – Page 28.

Day 4:
Continue discussing summarizing and paraphrasing.
Discuss classifying and categorizing words.
Assignment: Practice Book Page 29
MODIFICATIONS: Reading selections will be read aloud, and answers will be recorded on white board. 

Day 5:
Continue discussing summarizing and paraphrasing.
Administer reading test.
MODIFICATIONS: Accommodations will be made for students with readers and/or scribes.  Students will work in small groups during the week.  We will use direct instruction, visual supports, modeling, guided reading, pre-teaching vocabulary, etc. to meet the needs of our students. 
EXTENSIONS: Students will discuss their favorite folk tales from stories they have heard growing up.  These stories can come from family members such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles or from close friends.
