One of our Breathitt High School students has been selected to receive an extremely prestigious national scholarship. The program is an extremely competitive one. There are approximately 3500 applicants with only a 10% acceptance rate. Each year thousands of students across the US apply in hopes of the opportunity to take part in this truly unique experience. Now more than ever, it is important that Americans have the necessary linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to promote international dialogue and support American engagement abroad. The program NSLI-Y aims to provide opportunities to American youth that will spark a lifetime interest in language learning.
AJ Miller has been selected to receive a 2016-2017 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Scholarship. The program is sponsored by the Government of the United States of America through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative that prepares American citizens to be leaders in a global world. Scholarships are available for students to learn the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian, Turkish and Russian. The program can take place in different locations throughout the world.
The scholarship AJ received is for the Summer Russian Language program. AJ will be spending his summer in Chisnau, Moldova studying the Russian language and culture. He will be attending class daily, completing community projects and developing interpersonal relationships with peers and his host family. The program is rigorous with high expectations and full immersion into the culture. Congratulation on your wonderful accomplishment.
