NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

JANUARY IS SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION MONTH!

Please be sure to thank your local School Board Member for their Hard Work!

(Jan. 23, 2018) – Kentucky will again observe January as School Board Recognition Month and the Breathitt County School District is joining in the celebration.

The Breathitt County Board of Education is composed of Chair Ruschelle Hamilton – 5 ½ years; Vice-Chair Albert Little – 5 years; Member Becky Watkins – 5 years; Member George Johnson – 3 years; Member John Hollan – 1 year.

“The voters of our community have created a special group of education leaders in this board,” said Superintendent Phillip Watts.  “They are true partners in the work to ensure every child in every classroom can experience high quality teaching and learning.  And they have been courageous in their leadership of this district toward that end.  Over the past five years, the Breathitt County School District under this leadership has made great strides toward achieving its mission of becoming a Distinguished District.  They have been responsible stewards of tax payer funds, they have created a culture where students and staff are expected to perform at high levels, and they have been diligent in providing adequate resources for students and staff.”

“When you consider how state and federal funding is shrinking, our school board has faced tremendous challenges, and members haven’t flinched from their responsibilities,” he said. “Our community can be very proud of this team of board members, and I’m proud to be their partner working for education excellence for our children.”

Across the Commonwealth, Kentucky’s 173 public school systems will use January to recognize the work of the state’s 867 local school board members.

“School board members across Kentucky have faced numerous and growing challenges the past few years, and this year has been a particularly challenging one,” said KSBA President David Webster, chairman of the Simpson County Board of Education. “As I traveled the state last fall, I saw the dedication in every local school board member to make Kentucky’s schools among the tops in the nation to ensure our children can be competitive wherever they may go. I am very proud to be a local school board member in Kentucky.”

At the board meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, board members were recognized at the meeting with a certificate.  Be sure to thank your board members for the hard work they do to improve education and the instructional process in Breathitt County.
